Windy tummies
Herbal support for windy tummies in babies and children.
Gentle herbal support for windy tummies, in babies and children alike.
Parents usually spot the pattern before anything else. Knees drawn up to the chest. Fussiness that arrives twenty minutes after a feed. A tummy that looks tight and feels swollen. An older child who says their tummy hurts but cannot point to where. Wind is uncomfortable, and small bodies have limited ways of telling you so.
Little Bellies was formulated for exactly that picture. It brings together four herbs traditionally used to soothe a tense tummy and help wind move through more comfortably. It works gently and gradually rather than all at once, and it can be added to a milk feed, water, juice or a little food.
Chamomile, Fennel, Wild Yam, Ginger.
Babies 0 to 1 year: 4 drops added to a milk feed, two to three times a day.
Ages 1 to 3: 10 drops in milk, water or juice, two to three times a day.
Ages 3 to 6: 20 drops in milk, water or juice, two to three times a day.
Ages 6 to 9: 40 drops in milk, water or juice, two to three times a day.
If your practitioner has advised a different amount for your child, please follow their recommendation. Shake the bottle before use, store in a cool place out of direct sunlight, and keep out of reach of children.
Please contact us before use if your child is taking any medication or has a diagnosed medical condition. Chamomile can cause a reaction in children sensitive to plants in the daisy family. Call the clinic on 01625 54 9000 if you would like to talk it through first.
Wind is common and usually harmless. Some things are not, and they can look similar in a very young baby. Please speak to your GP, call NHS 111, or in an emergency call 999 if your baby or child has persistent inconsolable crying, a swollen or rigid tummy that is painful to touch, vomiting that is green or repeated, blood in the nappy or stool, refusal to feed, poor weight gain, a high temperature, or unusual floppiness or drowsiness.
Herbal support is for everyday discomfort. It is not a substitute for having a baby looked at, and no parent should feel they are overreacting by asking.
Children's herbal tinctures are gentle liquid extracts prepared using a small amount of alcohol. The alcohol draws out the plant constituents that matter, including the aromatic oils, resins, alkaloids and flavonoids. Once diluted in milk, water or juice, the alcohol content becomes extremely low, usually less than that found naturally in ripe fruit, and is considered suitable for children at these doses.
If your child wants a little sweetness, add a touch of honey, agave or sugar. Honey is only suitable for children over one year old.
Where the tummy aches arrive on school mornings and vanish at weekends, the cause is often the nervous system rather than digestion. Our guide to why children get ill every September covers how the two feed into each other. The full Children's Health range is here.
